Your guide to the Big BT Switch-Off and why you should switch to Smarter Working

What exactly is the Big BT Switch-Off?

The UK’s traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) infrastructure has been around for decades. Now, with the advance of technology and the advent of flexible working, it’s time to change to a better, more capable way of communicating. So, in 2023 BT Openreach will stop installing, selling, and maintaining these old copper-based services. Then in 2025, legacy networks will be withdrawn completely, and businesses will need to upgrade to full fibre network to maintain their connectivity.

With the countdown under way, the Big BT Switch-Off has the potential to affect a lot more than just how you make calls too, as so much more relies on your network connectivity to operate. Here are a few examples.

So what exactly is changing, and how will it affect you?

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is the familiar landline telephone system originally set up in the early 20th Century for analogue voice calls, and which has been used to carry internet services in more recent years. The Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) was developed to use the PSTN network, but allowed the digital transmission of voice, video and other services simultaneously. Now, and despite radical upgrading, both are struggling to cope with modern online demand, and have become costly to maintain.

The answer is a new network using fibre cables rather than copper wires. This will be able to carry all sorts of data with much greater flexibility as much of it is cloud-based. It will be based around Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and will allow users to make voice and video calls on a global scale using computer and mobile devices with an internet connection.
